Karate is a form of martial arts originated from Okinawa, with much influence from ancient China. Karate, translated, means
“empty hand,” although, all parts of the body are utilized. Karate is primarily used as a means for self defense.
Karate allows you to become more effective in many ways. Training will improve your mind and body. You will learn to become
more aware of your body movement. In turn, it will improve your balance and coordination.
In addition to learning a worthwhile skill, karate also provides an excellent form of fitness. It improves flexibility,
strength and body tone. Training increases heart rate, which is very important for a healthy
cardiovascular system.
At Karate Hawaii, you will learn the basic forms, kata, kumite, weapons and practice combinations of moves.
Each aspect is vital to the learning process and its importance is stressed.
We teach the mastery of both Shotokan and Shorinryu (Matsubayashi-ryu) styles of karate. To better adapt students to various
situations, we also use techniques and moves from Judo, Boxing, and Ju Jitsu to develop all-around proficiency.
Kata
Kata is a set series of movements. It is emphasized in our training sessions to enhance the learning process
of particular moves and allows students a way to learn and perfect stance and form with or without another person. It helps
to improve muscle strength, at the same time understanding the theory behind each move.
Kumite
Kumite, or sparring, is also taught to allow students to practice what was learned in a controlled environment so they
will be prepared in life threatening situations. Control and precision is emphasized more so than strength. Heavy contact
during practice is not allowed.
Kobudo (Weapons)
Though Karate is an empty hand form, weapons may still be used at particular times. Students are shown different weapons
to be familiar with them in case a situation should arise.
Weapons kata may be taught to improve form and coordination with the item. Weapons that may be taught are Bo, Sai, Nunchaku,
etc.
